Yes, I thought that would catch your eye.
So first a disclaimer - the term 'idea sex' was not coined by me, but by ever-thought provoking client, Charlie Turnbull, owner of Turnbulls deli in Shaftesbury, Dorset, educator of deli-owners/start-ups and an international cheese judge. Yes, the last role really does exist. But it's not one you will hear in any careers office. To be a cheese judge you not only need to eat lots of cheese, but have experience, time, a bit of age, and more experience. And to recognise true quality when you come across it and see how it could mature.
But back to 'idea sex'...
Charlie and I were sitting in his deli shooting the breeze one Saturday morning before Christmas about our respective business plans for 2016. Having worked together intermittently for about 8 years with Lola helping him develop his intellectual assets to build longterm growth for what might seem to be a niche offering, we know each other well.
'Networking' bubbled up in the conversation around its relative merits or otherwise. Laughingly Charlie outlined his three key rules in what can be a tortuous process... i) arrive, quickly work out who you want to meet, if no-one then get out, ii) are the people who interest you open-minded, prepared to share ideas openly? if not - move on, iii) but there are those that just 'get you', what you're about, your business and that is the moment 'idea sex' happens... You both recognise the potential value in your overlapping thinking.
You start riffing on ideas, they ebb, flow, get discarded, but then perhaps just one offers a real opportunity between you. It's vital not to lose it in that fleeting moment, so ensure you make time to nurture it, foster it together. It is often from the space between products, services or companies that great new ideas grow.
Perhaps it should be no surprise that Charlie came up with the 'idea sex' thinking - as a cheese judge, he has to recognise true quality and be able to see how a product could develop to maturity.
So have a great 2016 and go practice lots of 'idea sex' - this time next year you could have a new growing baby business or product, aligning two areas that you never anticipated might prove fruitful!
